Rent a Local Friend in Bangkok: How It Works and What It Costs (2026)

Bangkok gets a lot easier when you have someone next to you who already knows which boat to take and what that sign on the food stall says.

Bangkok can feel like a lot on day one. There's the heat, the traffic, menus you can't read, and a train map with two different systems. With Yes! Oppa, you spend a few hours with a local friend from our Crew. They know the city and speak English.

This post covers how it works, what you can expect, what it costs and how booking goes. No sales talk, just the details.

What you get

You get time with a Crew member. That's the whole idea. The two of you decide together what to do, first in the chat and then on the day itself. Nothing is fixed in advance. If you wake up wanting noodles and a river instead of shopping, just say so.

We don't hand you a schedule or decide the day for you. It's a bit like meeting a friend of a friend who lives in Bangkok. They're happy to show you their side of the city, answer your questions and help with the small stuff, like ordering, reading signs or getting a Grab to the right spot.

Who you meet

Crew members are locals who speak English and enjoy spending time with visitors. They're regular people with their own favorite neighborhoods, snacks and shortcuts. Nobody is reading from a script.

Yes! Oppa started in Seoul, and the idea is the same here: a friendly local, a relaxed pace and real conversation. You can ask the things you might feel awkward asking a stranger. How do you pay at a street stall? What's polite at a temple? Where do people actually go after work?

What a day could look like in Bangkok

Here are a few things you might do. None of it is promised. It depends on what you and your Crew member decide together, the weather and how you feel that day.

If you love coffee, Ari and Thonglor are full of cafes. Hopping between a couple of them is an easy way to talk and cool off. On a weekend, you could wander Chatuchak weekend market. It's huge, and having a local beside you makes it much less overwhelming.

Getting around is part of the fun. You could ride the BTS or MRT, hop on one of the Chao Phraya river boats, or call a Grab when your feet give up. Your Crew member can show you how the tickets and cards work, so you feel confident on your own afterward.

In the evening, you might head to Chinatown, Yaowarat, at night, when the street food comes out and the signs light up. Street food is a big reason people fall for Bangkok, and new dishes are easier to try with someone who can tell you what you're pointing at. One practical note: Bangkok is hot, and rain showers can roll in fast. A loose, flexible day with a few indoor backup ideas tends to work well.

What it costs

The fee is from $25 per hour with a 4-hour minimum, so a booking starts from $100. If you're having a good time and want more, you can extend by the hour. The exact amount is confirmed in the chat before you pay, so there are no surprises.

The fee is for your Crew member's time. Day-of costs like food, drinks, tickets and transport are separate. While you're out together, travelers usually cover their Crew member's share of those, much like you'd treat a friend who's showing you around their city.

Booking and payment

Booking is simple. Message us on the site. In the chat, agree on a date, a start time and how many people are coming. Once that's settled and the amount is confirmed, you pay upfront with a PayPal link.

  • Read the refund rules in our Terms before you pay, so you know where you stand.
  • Message as early as you can. It gives you more room if your travel days shift.
  • Double check the date, start time and number of people in the chat before paying.
  • If something changes on your side, tell us in the chat right away.
  • Keep your PayPal receipt until after your day in Bangkok.

Message early if you have a date in mind

If you have a date in mind, message early. Each Crew member has their own schedule, and some days may already be taken. If no one is free at your time, we tell you straight away instead of holding your money, so you're never left waiting.

FAQ

Do I need to know any Thai?
Not at all. Your Crew member speaks English, so you can chat freely, and they can step in when you need to talk with a vendor or driver.
Can I bring friends along?
Yes. Group size is one of the details you agree on before paying, so include everyone when you first message us. Your total will reflect it once it's confirmed in the chat.
What happens if it rains?
Showers in Bangkok often pass quickly. You can duck into a cafe or ride the BTS for a while, then pick things back up when the sky clears.
Can we stay out longer than four hours?
Yes. Four hours is only the starting point. If you both want to keep going, mention it in the chat and the new total is confirmed there.
Do I have to decide everything before the day?
No. A rough idea helps, like food or markets, but plenty of choices get made on the spot once you meet and see how the day feels.
